What We Install

Intercom Solutions for Brownstones

Flush-Mount or Surface Door Station

Door station installed into the brownstone's front entry or iron gate. Flush-mount for a clean look in brownstone door frames, surface-mount where masonry prevents recessing. Weatherproofed for full outdoor exposure.

Video Intercom with Indoor Monitor

See who's at the door before answering. Wired monitor in the entry foyer or kitchen — no Wi-Fi dependency, no app required if not desired.

Smartphone App Option

IP-based systems let you answer your door from your phone anywhere. Useful for brownstone owners with rental units or for answering delivery calls when you're not on the ground floor.

Multi-Unit Lobby Panel

For 2-4 unit brownstones with separate tenants, a lobby panel with individual unit buttons. Each tenant answers their own calls — completely independent.

Electric Strike Integration

The brownstone front door or vestibule gate releases when the button is pressed. We select and install the right electric strike for your specific door frame, lock type, and fire code requirements.

Existing Wiring Reuse

Many Brooklyn and Manhattan brownstones have original intercom wiring. We test and assess before pulling new cable — saving cost and wall penetrations in buildings with original plasterwork.

Why It Matters

Brownstone Entry Systems Have Unique Challenges

Brownstones combine historic architecture with modern urban living — intercom installation requires care about both the building fabric and the residents' actual usage patterns.

Original Plaster Walls

Brownstones built between the 1880s and 1930s have plaster over masonry walls — fishing wire is harder than in modern framing. We plan cable routes through less visible paths: basement runs, existing conduit, and riser chases.

Iron Entry Gates

Many Brooklyn and Harlem brownstones have iron gate vestibules. Electric strikes for iron gate frames require specific hardware — we select and spec the right unit for the frame type and verify operation before completion.

Multi-Unit Tenant Scenarios

A three-unit brownstone needs independent intercom coverage for each floor. Tenants should be able to answer their own calls without going through another unit — system design and wiring need to support this from the start.

Historic District Considerations

Some brownstones in Landmark Preservation Commission districts have restrictions on visible exterior modifications. We install door stations in ways that are minimally visible from the street where required.

FAQ

Common Questions — Brownstones

In most cases, yes. The door station itself will be visible — that's unavoidable — but the cable connecting it to the indoor unit doesn't need to run on the outside of the building. We typically route cable through the door frame, into a basement channel, or through interior walls depending on the brownstone's layout. In multi-unit brownstones, the riser (the vertical wall chase between floors) is often usable. We assess the routing during the site visit and identify the cleanest path before starting work.
Possibly. Original 2-wire systems can support basic audio intercoms — we test the wire for continuity and shorts first. The limiting factor is usually wire gauge: 24AWG or thinner may not provide enough signal quality at longer runs. For audio-only replacements, this often works fine. For video systems, which require more bandwidth, 4-conductor cable of appropriate gauge is needed — if the existing wire doesn't meet spec, we'll need to pull new cable. We'll tell you exactly what we find during the assessment.
For a single-family brownstone where the owner lives on all floors, a simple wired video intercom with one indoor monitor and a door station is clean and reliable — no apps, no subscriptions, just a camera and a release button. If you want smartphone answering to admit delivery workers when you're not home, an IP video system like the Aiphone IX-DV with app integration adds that capability without complexity. For owners who travel frequently or manage the property remotely, the smartphone answering feature becomes more valuable. We help you choose based on how you actually use the front door.
Yes — electric strikes work with virtually any door that has a standard strike plate location. The electric strike replaces the existing strike plate in the door frame; when triggered by the intercom, it releases the latch. The door hardware itself (deadbolt, handle, or knob) isn't modified. For ornamental or period door hardware, we select compact electric strikes that fit the frame without requiring modifications to the door's appearance. If the existing door uses a non-standard lock or has an unusual frame, we note that during the assessment and spec accordingly.
Yes. IP and cloud-connected intercom systems support remote door release — you receive the call on your smartphone anywhere and can press a button to release the door for a trusted delivery worker. Some systems also support temporary access codes: a numeric code the delivery worker enters at a keypad to open the door, set to expire after a window you define. For brownstone owners who work outside the building or travel, this is one of the most practical features of a modern intercom system.
