What We Install

Intercom Solutions for Retail

Video Door Station

Camera at the store entry. Staff see every customer approaching before the door unlocks. Deters opportunistic theft and gives staff time to assess before buzzing someone in.

In-Store Monitor or Controller

Wall-mounted monitor or countertop unit at the point of sale or service desk. Staff see the camera, hear the customer, and buzz them in with one button press.

Electric Door Strike

Keeps the door locked until a staff member actively unlocks it. Prevents uncontrolled entry during busy periods. Required by some insurance policies for jewelry, luxury goods, and cannabis retail.

Delivery and Service Entry

Back of house or service entry gets its own door station. Delivery drivers call through before access is granted to the stock room — controlled entry for non-customer access points.

After-Hours Security

Door stays locked after hours. Intercom calls route to a manager's mobile phone — authorized deliveries or contractors can be admitted remotely without a staff member being on-site.

Camera Recording Integration

Door station camera footage integrates with or supplements your existing camera system — every entry and exit recorded at the door as a separate event log.

Why It Matters

Why Retail Stores Use Controlled Entry Systems

For certain retail categories, controlled entry is an operational necessity — not just a nice-to-have security upgrade.

High-Value Product Protection

Jewelry stores, luxury boutiques, watch dealers, and cannabis dispensaries use buzzers as a primary theft deterrent. Forcing a visual assessment before entry dramatically reduces smash-and-grab and flash mob robbery risk.

Insurance Requirements

Some insurance policies for high-value retail require controlled entry systems as a condition of coverage. We provide documentation of the installed system for insurance compliance purposes.

Staff Safety

Retail staff working alone — especially during early open or late close shifts — benefit from a door intercom that lets them see who's entering before unlocking. NYC retail crime often targets stores during transition periods.

Customer Flow Control

High-end boutiques and appointment-based stores use controlled entry to manage customer density — one party at a time, or only by appointment. The intercom is the mechanism that enforces this operationally.

FAQ

Common Questions — Retail

Jewelry stores typically need a video intercom with a robust electric strike or magnetic lock — not just a buzzer. The door should stay closed until a staff member actively releases it after seeing the customer on camera. Aiphone video systems with a countertop or wall-mount monitor at the service case are the most common configuration. The camera should cover the full door entry area — including blind spots where someone could stand off to the side. We design the camera angle and door station placement to eliminate sight gaps.
ADA requires that accessible entry be provided for people with disabilities. A buzzed entry door can be ADA-compliant when the intercom and door release are within reach range, the door opens with limited force when released, and there's an alternative path for those who can't use the call button (such as a direct call to staff). For retail locations with ADA concerns, we design the system to comply with reach range requirements and advise on signage. We're familiar with NYC DOB requirements for accessible entrances.
The door station camera records every person who enters — this is inherently useful for loss prevention. For retail locations with existing NVR or DVR systems, we can often integrate the door station camera as an additional channel on the existing recorder. Alternatively, IP door stations can record to a local network storage device independently. Either way, you have timestamped entry and exit footage accessible alongside your interior cameras.
Exit is always free and immediate — no buzzer required to leave. The door has a push-to-exit device on the interior side that releases the electric strike mechanically, allowing exit without any electrical involvement. Fire egress doors comply with NYC fire code regardless of access control or intercom configuration. Entry is controlled; exit is never controlled.
The service or delivery entrance gets its own door station. Drivers press the button, a call rings at the stockroom or manager's desk, staff verify the delivery and buzz them in. This keeps delivery traffic completely separate from the retail floor. For after-hours deliveries when no staff is on-site, we can configure temporary access codes that expire after a set window — the driver uses the code, which is logged with a timestamp.
