Yes. We configure the door control system with a global lockdown mode — all doors go to locked/secured state simultaneously from a single keyswitch, push button, or software command in the main office. This is compatible with standard NYC school lockdown procedures. Each door can also be individually controlled. Fail-safe vs. fail-secure settings are specified for each door based on its function: emergency exits always fail-safe; primary entry doors can be configured either way depending on the school's preference and fire code requirements.

Dismissal is typically handled with a call-and-release workflow: parents arrive at the front door, ring the intercom, office staff recognize them or verify ID over the intercom camera, and buzz them in. For high-volume dismissal at elementary schools where dozens of parents arrive simultaneously, we can configure a vestibule airlock setup — visitors are admitted into a secure vestibule where ID verification happens before the inner door unlocks. Some schools also issue ID badge readers for pre-authorized frequent visitors.

Intercom panels and access control systems include battery backup, typically providing 4–8 hours of operation during a power outage. Door hardware is configured to fail-safe (unlock) on power loss for fire egress compliance — exit is always free. For school security, we discuss the appropriate fail mode for the main entrance with administration; options include fail-secure with battery backup providing extended locked operation.

IP door stations from manufacturers like 2N and Aiphone can typically be added as additional channels on an existing NVR that supports IP cameras. We verify compatibility with your existing camera system during the assessment. If integration isn't feasible, the door station camera can record independently to local storage on the intercom panel, with footage accessible separately. Either way, entry and exit footage is preserved.
