Where Hartmann Controls Lives in NYC

Hartmann is enterprise commercial access control, not residential. NYC installs skew healthcare, higher education, places of worship, and medium-to-large commercial, where scalable door counts (hundreds of doors), scripted logic through the Odyssey ACE engine, and on-prem control matter more than cloud SaaS convenience.

The hardware story is the Above-The-Door PoE controllers (POE-ODM one-door and POE-TDM two-door), where one CAT5 cable powers every component at the door, an on-board LCD provides diagnostics, and an optional built-in motion sensor is available. For retrofits where traditional access cabling is already in place, the PRS controller line slots into legacy wiring and ships in 2-8 door kits or 2-64 floor elevator configurations.

Service calls center on Odyssey or PROTECTOR.Net web admin, controller firmware, HC Atom embedded server health, and Wiegand reader integration. Mobile credentials run through HC Key for users and HC Admin for administrators. Hartmann is dealer-channel, so admin recovery after a dealer handoff is a common first call.

HC Atom Embedded Server (HC Atom embedded server)

HC Atom Embedded Server

Linux-based compact on-prem server that hosts Odyssey for sites of 40 doors or less. Web interface for backup, restore, and firmware upgrades. Keeps the entire system on-site with no cloud dependence; useful for buildings that refuse SaaS access control.

Odyssey Software (Enterprise) (Odyssey enterprise access control software)

Odyssey Software (Enterprise)

Current flagship web-based access control software, scales to tens of thousands of doors. Customizable dashboards with widgets, graphs, and shortcuts. ACE server-side scripting engine for custom automation. IP-level DSC PowerSeries Neo intrusion integration. Modern HTML5 interface.

PROTECTOR.Net Software (All-In-One) (PROTECTOR.Net web-based software)

PROTECTOR.Net Software (All-In-One)

Previous-flagship web-based access control, still fully supported. Unlimited users, doors, partitions, and administrators. AES-256 server-to-controller, SSL, mantrap and anti-passback, invalid-password lockout. Active maps, crisis levels, LDAP integration, partition-based admin rules.

HC Key and HC Admin Mobile Apps (HC Key (user))

HC Key and HC Admin Mobile Apps

HC Key is the user mobile credential: Pulse Unlock doors from an iOS or Android phone over Bluetooth or NFC, with QR enrollment from the admin page. HC Admin lets administrators issue credentials, revoke access, override doors or floors, view live alerts, and execute Odyssey or PROTECTOR.Net Action Plans from any mobile device.

What We See in the Field

Hartmann failures center on dealer handoff, controller firmware, and Odyssey/network interaction.

01

Odyssey or PROTECTOR.Net admin lost after dealer handoff

Hartmann is dealer-channel. When a dealer relationship ends, the Odyssey or PROTECTOR.Net admin account can be stranded with the previous dealer. Admin recovery requires Hartmann support coordination and proof of building ownership.

Affects: All Hartmann sites after a dealer transition

02

PoE Above-The-Door controller unresponsive after firmware push

Rare but recurring: a mid-firmware power interruption leaves the controller in a boot loop with the LCD showing a diagnostic code. Recovery is a bench reflash or a swap to a replacement unit. Keep spare controllers on-site for critical doors.

Affects: POE-ODM, POE-TDM across all variants

03

PRS controller lost from Odyssey after switch or VLAN change

PRS controllers depend on stable network paths back to Odyssey. ISP router swaps, switch replacements, and VLAN re-tagging break controller-to-server reachability without obvious symptoms at the door. We reconfigure static IPs or DHCP reservations and verify firewall rules.

Affects: PRS-2DR, PRS-IO, PRS-TDM deployments

04

POE-APERIO-8 lock pairing drops

The POE-APERIO-8 controller bridges Hartmann and ASSA ABLOY Aperio wireless locks. Battery drain on the wireless locks or RF interference causes pairing to drop. Replace lock batteries and verify the hub-to-lock RSSI during a site visit.

Affects: Buildings using Aperio integration

05

HC Atom disk degradation at 5-plus years

HC Atom is a compact Linux appliance with a single storage device. At the 5 to 7 year mark we see read-latency warnings and occasional unexplained reboots. The fix is a planned disk refresh or migration to a current HC Atom unit; database export preserves the full Odyssey config.

Affects: HC Atom units past the 5-year mark

06

ACE script syntax error after Odyssey upgrade

Hartmann ACE scripts carry forward across major Odyssey upgrades but occasional API deprecations silently break custom logic (truancy reports, card-counting, time-based schedules). We review the ACE log after each upgrade and patch broken scripts in-place.

Affects: Sites running ACE automation on Odyssey

The Service Specifics

Hartmann is dealer-channel for new installs, which means Odyssey admin access on a customer site is typically mediated by the installing dealer. When a dealer relationship ends, Hartmann support can transfer the account to a new dealer with the customer's authorization. We handle the paperwork and take over service from the original dealer.

Readers are Wiegand-connected and work across HC-branded proximity, HC Bluetooth and NFC, HID, AWID, and Pyramid credentials. On-prem is a deployment choice (HC Atom embedded server) rather than an architectural limitation; Hartmann also supports mobile credentials via HC Key and remote admin via HC Admin, so a site can run fully on-site, fully mobile, or any mix.

The Legacy Install Base

Pre-current-generation Hartmann still in NYC installs.

Legacy 01

PROTECTOR.Net installs pre-dating Odyssey

PROTECTOR.Net is still fully supported. Migration to Odyssey is a planned engagement, not a forced upgrade; buildings on PROTECTOR.Net can stay there and continue to receive firmware and HC Key updates.

Legacy 02

Early HC Atom units (pre-2020)

First-generation HC Atom hardware runs older Odyssey builds. Still serviceable; we migrate the database to a current HC Atom unit when the storage reaches end of life.

Hartmann Controls Repair FAQ

Yes, this is our most common Hartmann engagement. Hartmann support transfers the Odyssey or PROTECTOR.Net account to a new dealer with proof of building ownership and the customer's authorization. We handle the Hartmann coordination and take over service from the original dealer. During the transfer, existing credentials and HC Key unlocks continue working.
Yes. HC Key is the user mobile credential, available on iOS and Android, with Bluetooth and NFC unlock at the reader. Enrollment is through a QR code from the HC Admin app. Administrators get the HC Admin app for issuing credentials, revoking access, overriding doors or floors, and executing Action Plans from a phone.
Yes. The on-board LCD on the Above-The-Door PoE controllers is the primary diagnostic surface. We read the error code, which usually points at a mid-firmware power interruption. The fix is a bench reflash or a swap to a spare controller. For critical doors we recommend keeping one or two spare POE-ODM or POE-TDM units on hand.
Yes. PRS controllers depend on stable network paths back to Odyssey. ISP router swaps, switch replacements, and VLAN re-tagging break controller-to-server reachability. We reconfigure static IPs or DHCP reservations at the new network, verify firewall rules allow controller-to-Odyssey traffic, and re-establish the handshake. Same-visit for most sites.
Yes. PROTECTOR.Net and Odyssey share the same controller hardware (PoE Above-The-Door and PRS), so migration is a software-side operation: database export from PROTECTOR.Net, import into Odyssey, controller re-registration, verification of ACE scripts and schedules. No wire-pulling, no new readers. Typical mid-size site is one planned visit.
Same-day across NYC when the schedule allows, with priority for door failures leaving entries unsecured. Call 212-347-5400 for the soonest window.
