HPE Aruba Network Repair:
CX, Legacy ProVision, APs, ClearPass.

HPE Aruba is the primary enterprise alternative to Cisco in NYC healthcare, higher education, and larger offices that evaluated and rejected Cisco pricing. Strong footprint in NYU, Columbia-affiliated buildings, hospital systems, and law firms that migrated off Cisco during the 2016-2020 refresh cycle. We service current CX, legacy ProVision 2930F, enterprise APs, Mobility Controllers, and ClearPass.

Where Aruba Lives in NYC

HPE Aruba sits in enterprise verticals where Cisco pricing did not work and where cloud-only alternatives like UniFi or Meraki did not fit the compliance profile. NYU and Columbia-affiliated buildings, Mount Sinai and Northwell healthcare systems, and law firms that moved off Cisco during the 2016-2020 refresh all run significant Aruba install bases.

The service story splits between the current ArubaOS-CX platform (replacing legacy ProVision) and the enterprise AP line. ClearPass is the authentication layer underneath many Aruba wireless deployments, and ClearPass certificate expiration is one of the most common Aruba service calls across NYC healthcare.

Aruba Access Points (AP-515)

Aruba Access Points

Enterprise Wi-Fi 5/6/6E/7 APs managed by on-prem controller or Aruba Central cloud. Dominant in NYC healthcare and higher-ed Wi-Fi.

What We See in the Field

Enterprise Aruba failures cluster around auth infrastructure and firmware release gaps more than hardware.

01

ClearPass certificate expiration lockout

802.1X authentication breaks for every endpoint because the ClearPass RADIUS certificate expired overnight, locking users and devices out of wireless and wired network. Common on sites that lost the admin who set up ClearPass.

Affects: ClearPass Policy Manager alongside AP-515, AP-535, CX switches

02

Mobility Controller failover never fails back

Primary and standby controllers set up in HA, standby takes over on primary reboot, but primary never resumes active role without manual intervention. APs anchor on standby with degraded performance.

Affects: 7205, 7210 controllers and 9004 Branch Gateway paired with any AP series

03

CX firmware release gaps mid-upgrade

Multi-step firmware upgrade required (10.08 to 10.10 to 10.11, for example) and skipping intermediates bricks switch stacking. Common on sites doing their first ArubaOS-CX upgrade in years.

Affects: CX 6300F, CX 6400, CX 8100

04

Instant On and enterprise crossing wires

Site has both Instant On gear (bought by office manager) and enterprise Aruba (installed by IT) and they cannot be managed from the same console. Mystery coverage gaps appear because the office manager thinks everything is on their Instant On dashboard.

Affects: AP22/AP25 (Instant On) adjacent to AP-515/AP-535 (enterprise)

05

PoE++ (802.3bt) feature gating

Older 2930F switches advertise PoE+ but not PoE++, and newer APs or high-power cameras pull more than 30W and brown out. Upgrade to CX 6300F PoE++ is the usual fix.

Affects: 2930F series, 2920 series powering AP-635 / AP-655

06

Aruba Central disconnect after cert rotation

Switches and APs disconnect from Aruba Central cloud management when device cert chain changes and site firewall rules were not updated. Local operation continues but admin visibility is gone.

Affects: CX series switches, AP-515/535/635 with Central subscriptions

The Service Specifics

Aruba licensing is split between Aruba Central subscriptions (foundation, advanced, multi-year tiers) and perpetual Mobility Controller AP licenses on the on-prem side. Admin recovery is procedurally similar to Cisco: console-cable password reset, factory reset with config export.

Cloud dependencies are optional on CX switches and AP-series APs for core function but mandatory on Instant On which has no on-prem mode. ClearPass requires its own operational discipline, and the dominant service call is certificate renewal before expiration.

The Legacy Install Base

Legacy Aruba common in long-tenured NYC enterprise deployments.

Legacy 01

Aruba 2530 / 2920 series switches

Pre-2930 switching, EoS, still common in NYC schools and older corporate installs.

Legacy 02

Aruba AP-205 / AP-215 / AP-225 / AP-305

WiFi 5 generation enterprise APs installed widely 2014-2018. AP-305 reached end of sale November 2021. Still fully supported for firmware.

Legacy 03

Aruba 650 / 3200 Mobility Controllers

Pre-7000 series controllers, deployed in older campus Wi-Fi. EoS and spare parts dry.

Legacy 04

Aruba Airwave (classic)

On-prem management server predating Aruba Central cloud. Still run at some NYC universities for historical reporting.

Aruba Repair FAQ

Yes, often same-day. ClearPass certificate expiration is one of the most common Aruba outages. We generate and install a new certificate, deploy it across the ClearPass cluster, and restore 802.1X auth. If the certificate chain is complex (sub-CAs, device certs), we handle each layer. Priority dispatch for this outage because it locks the entire wireless and often wired network.
For new high-wattage endpoints (Wi-Fi 6E APs, PTZ cameras, USB-C PoE), yes. 2930F maxes at PoE+ (30W per port). Upgrade path is CX 6300F PoE++ for 60W+ ports. We can stage the upgrade so the switch replacement happens outside business hours and the new switch inherits the existing 2930F config.
Yes. Console-cable password reset for Mobility Controllers and switches. For ClearPass we use the backup admin recovery procedure (requires physical appliance access). Factory reset with config export is the fallback. Timeline is same-visit for most scenarios.
No, they are separate platforms with separate management consoles. Our usual recommendation is to pick one platform and consolidate: Instant On for simple SMB sites, enterprise Aruba (CX + Central) for anything larger. We can migrate Instant On deployments to enterprise Aruba where it makes sense.
Yes. Failed firmware upgrades on CX stacks usually need staged intermediate versions to recover. We identify your current and target versions, source the intermediate releases, and stage the upgrade one step at a time without bricking the stack. Scheduled maintenance window required.
Same-day across NYC when the schedule allows, with priority for ClearPass auth outages and healthcare / higher-ed sites. Call 212-347-5400 for the soonest window.
