UniFi Access Control Repair:
UA Hub, UA Pro, UA Intercom, Elevator Relay.

Ubiquiti's access control line (launched 2022, mature by 2024) brings UniFi's prosumer-to-commercial playbook to doors: cheap hardware, cloud or self-hosted controller, no per-user licensing. We service the full UA lineup across NYC small-to-mid commercial, startups, co-working, and tech-forward residential.

Where UniFi Access Fits

UniFi Access brings Ubiquiti's commodity-pricing playbook to doors. Hub, reader, and intercom hardware at a fraction of HID or Brivo pricing, with cloud-optional controller management (self-hosted on UDM Pro, Cloud Key, or your own hardware). The fit is small-to-mid commercial, co-working, startups, and tech-forward residential.

Not yet an enterprise or heavily-regulated multi-tenant play. Logging compliance, audit trails, and multi-site enterprise features are limited compared to Lenel or Brivo. For sites where that matters, we route the conversation to those platforms.

The service story is cloud-and-firmware: UniFi auto-updates can occasionally brick hardware, and the Protect/Access integration creates cross-platform fragility. Admin recovery is easier than Brivo because UniFi runs self-hosted (no cloud lockout risk).

What We See in the Field

UniFi Access failures cluster around firmware updates and door-sensor alignment.

01

UniFi OS firmware update bricks UA Hub

Infrequent but documented: an unattended UniFi Network update pushes UA Hub firmware that does not boot cleanly. Reader is dead, doors stuck in failsafe. Factory reset at the hub, re-adopt, restore config.

Affects: UA-Hub-Door, UA-Hub-Door-Mini, EAH-8, UA Ultra

02

UA Pro reader screen cracked by renter

Touchscreen is attractive but brittle. In rental and co-working environments it takes damage. Replacement unit required; screen is not field-replaceable.

Affects: UA Pro

03

Cloud or local controller offline

Doors continue to work on cached credentials but no new users can be added or revoked. For buildings with high tenant turnover this becomes a real problem by day 2 or 3.

Affects: All UniFi Access deployments

04

Mixed-protocol upgrade pain

Current UniFi Access controllers and G3 readers speak OSDP natively (added in 2023 firmware), and the readers also handle Wiegand via adapter for retrofit scenarios. The pain point now is matching legacy credential formats to current readers during a staged upgrade, not the protocol itself.

Affects: Retrofit scenarios from legacy prox or Wiegand

05

Door-held-open logic sensitive to magnet alignment

The included door position sensor is a small reed switch that misaligns easily if the door shifts in its frame. Nuisance door-forced alerts result. Realign or replace sensor.

Affects: All UA Hub-controlled doors

The Service Specifics

UniFi Access can run cloud-connected or fully self-hosted on your own hardware, which appeals to clients who refuse SaaS access control. Hardware is widely available through Ubiquiti's own store and major distributors; no dealer channel gatekeeping.

Admin recovery is tied to the UniFi SSO account. If nobody has it, we can factory-reset the controller software, but all event history and user records are lost unless there is a config backup. Backup discipline matters more than on cloud-managed platforms.

The Early-Release Install Base

First-generation UA hardware.

Legacy 01

First-generation UA-Hub units

2022 release with older firmware tracks. Still supported but newer features (video history, improved facial unlock) require current-gen G3 readers paired with UA-Hub-Door, EAH-8, or UA Ultra.

UniFi Access Repair FAQ

Yes. Factory reset at the hub via console pin, re-adopt from the controller, restore config from the last backup. Timeline is same-visit for most situations. Prevention going forward: disable auto-updates and stage firmware upgrades during maintenance windows.
Yes, doors continue granting access on cached credentials. The limitation is you cannot add new users, revoke access, or see new events until the controller comes back. For high-turnover sites (co-working, rental) this becomes a real problem by day 2-3, so controller restoration is a priority call.
Honestly, often no. For enterprise logging compliance, deep audit trails, multi-site centralized management, or regulated environments (healthcare, finance), we recommend Brivo, Openpath, or Lenel. For small-to-mid commercial without those requirements, UniFi Access is a strong fit.
No, the touchscreen is not field-replaceable. Whole-unit replacement is the fix. For exposed locations with repeat damage we can recommend UA G2 instead, which has no touchscreen and is more vandal-resistant.
Yes, with physical access to the controller hardware. We can factory-reset the controller software and re-register under a new SSO account. The caveat is that event history and user records are lost without a config backup. New enrollments and setup take one site visit.
Same-day across NYC when the schedule allows, with priority for door failures leaving entries unsecured. Call 212-347-5400 for the soonest window.
