Card reader repair . NYC and tri-state

Card reader not working? We repair, replace and re-enroll.

No lights, no beep when a card is presented, or it stopped reading certain cards. It can be the reader, the wiring or the credential. We diagnose on site and get the door working in the same visit in most cases.

READER · 01 / NO LIGHTS, NO BEEP

No lights, no beep

The reader is completely dead. No power light and no response when a card is presented. It lost power, lost its link to the panel, or the reader itself failed.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
Power at the reader, then the run back to the panel.
READER · 02 / LIT, BUT CARDS DO NOTHING

Lit, but cards do nothing

The light is on, but no card registers. The sensing side of the reader has failed, or the data signal to the panel is broken.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
The data line to the panel, then the reader itself.
READER · 03 / ONLY SOME CARDS FAIL

Only some cards fail

Most cards work, a few do not. Those cards were removed from the system, are physically worn, or use a format this reader does not read.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
The card record in the software, then a known-good card.
READER · 04 / WORKS ON AND OFF

Works on and off

It reads sometimes and fails other times. Weather getting in, electronics on the way out, or a splice that is failing. We watch it fail, then fix the cause.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
The seal on the reader and every splice on the run.
READER · 05 / DAMAGED OR PRIED OFF

Damaged or pried off

Cracked, pried off the wall, sprayed or weather damaged. A matched replacement, with a stronger mount where it keeps happening.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
The wiring behind the mount, then a matched replacement.
READER · 06 / SEVERAL READERS DEAD AT ONCE

Several readers dead at once

More than one reader went dark at the same time. That is rarely the readers. It points to the power supply or the panel that feeds them, and it is a priority call.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
The power supply and the panel feeding those readers.

What takes readers out 05

The five common culprits, in the order we check them.

Readers are exposed to weather and used all day. The list of failures is short.

01

Lost power or a wiring break

The reader is fine but lost power or its data link to the panel. A cable damaged in a renovation, a corroded splice, or a ground fault. We trace it with a meter and repair the break.

PowerWiring
02

Weather intrusion

Outdoor and exposed readers take rain, snow and sidewalk spray. Moisture gets behind the seal and the electronics corrode. We clean and reseal when we can, and replace when the damage is too deep.

Reader
03

Reader at end of life

Readers wear out. Antenna fatigue and aging electronics cause intermittent or complete failure after seven or more years. We replace it with a current model matched to your cards.

Reader
04

Card technology mismatch

A newer card type, such as DESFire or newer iCLASS, presented at an older reader that only reads legacy formats. Not a failed reader, a compatibility gap. A reader upgrade or a dual-tech reader fixes it.

CredentialReader
05

Vandalism and impact damage

Readers at exposed entries get kicked, pried and sprayed. We replace them and reinforce the mount where repeat damage is likely.

Front door reader dead?

When the reader at the main entrance dies, people get stuck outside or the door gets propped open. Tell us the reader brand and the card type, and we bring a matching reader on the first visit.

Any brand, even if we did not install it

You do not need the original installer.

We work on the common reader brands across NYC, including systems from installers who are no longer around. We identify what is there, match or replace the reader, and get the door working.

The reader and panel brands we service

Readers and the panels they report to, across the brands common in NYC buildings. Plus Wiegand-era readers in older installs, where we fit modern readers that work on the existing wiring.

Repair or replace

Readers are usually a replacement.

When we replace

Reader hardware is inexpensive and widely available. When a reader has failed, a replacement almost always costs less than a deep repair. We match your existing cards, or fit a dual-tech reader if you are moving to newer cards.

When we repair

The reader is premium hardware worth a bench repair, such as OSDP, biometric or high-security models. Or the fault is really at the panel, the wiring or the card record, and the reader is fine. We confirm that before we quote a new reader.

The repair visit 04

How a reader call goes.

Four steps, and we test the full path from card to open door before we leave.

01

Phone triage

Completely dead, lit but not reading, certain cards failing, or physical damage. Five minutes on the phone tells us which reader to bring.

02

On-site diagnostic

Reader power, the link to the panel, and card sensing, in that order. The first 10 minutes isolates the failure.

03

Install and enroll

New reader mounted, wiring verified, reader programmed into the panel. We match your card type, so nobody needs a new card.

04

Test with real cards

Several real user cards tested, the panel log shows the reads, and the door opens correctly. Written summary for your records.

Frequent questions 05

Card reader dead FAQ.

Yes. We match the new reader to your existing card type, such as HID Prox, iCLASS, MIFARE or DESFire, so your users do not need new cards. If you are moving to newer cards at the same time, a dual-tech reader supports both until everyone has a new card.
Almost always the card. Cards wear out over the years from bending, cracking or moisture, or they were removed from the system without anyone being told. We check the software first, then test with a known-good card. If the card is bad, we issue a new one.
Yes. For exposed entrances we recommend narrow mullion readers that are harder to pry, vandal-resistant housings, and a tamper alert that tells you when the reader is forced. The right choice depends on the location and the risk.
In most cases, yes. Many modern readers support both OSDP and Wiegand, so we can install a new reader on the existing wiring. For full OSDP, the secure modern standard, the wiring may need to be verified or extended. We tell you what is possible on your system.
Same-day across NYC when the schedule allows, with priority for exterior and main entrance readers that leave the building unsecured. Call 212-347-5400 for the soonest window.
