Where Mircom Lives in NYC

Mircom has deep roots in NYC multi-tenant voice entry, lobby panel and apartment station both. The current spec in new installs and major upgrades is the TX3 Touch digital directory with an HD web camera and provision for a built-in IP camera, paired with IS-series suite stations in the apartments on the 4-wire bus driven by the MA-485A amplifier. For buildings keeping an existing paper directory or an all-audio footprint, TX3 reinforced electronic directory panels and the legacy KV-series vandal-resistant lobby panels are both still in the catalog and still fully supported.

The migration story in NYC right now is POTS sunset. Verizon and the other carriers are retiring copper POTS lines that older TX3 panels used for the dial-out to a tenant phone. Mircom's answer is MiVoIP, a cloud VoIP service that routes TX3 calls over IP, so the panel keeps working without a dial-tone pair. The apartment side, IS-series on a 4-wire riser, does not touch POTS and is unaffected.

MiVoIP Cloud VoIP POTS-Sunset Migration

Mircom's cloud VoIP service for TX3 lobby panels. Replaces the carrier POTS line requirement with IP routing through Mircom's cloud, so the TX3 keeps dialing tenants without a copper dial-tone pair. The migration path for every NYC building affected by Verizon's POTS retirement. Pairs with MiConnect, MiEntry, and MiVision for admin and mobile credential.

What We See in the Field

Mircom field work splits across POTS sunset, IS-series bus faults, TX3 Touch display and firmware, and KV legacy aging.

01

TX3 panel loses dial-out after POTS line retirement

Carriers across NYC are retiring the copper POTS pair that older TX3 panels dialed tenants on. The panel still powers up, the directory still displays, but calls do not complete. We cut the panel over to MiVoIP, verify tenant dial-out, and label the cloud routing for the super.

Affects: TX3-120, TX3-2000, TX3 Touch installs on retired copper

02

IS-series suite station silent on the MA-485A bus

A single apartment goes silent while neighbors stay fine. Usually a dead station, a disturbed 4-wire pair in a junction, or an occasional MA-485A port fault. We trace the bus, swap in a replacement IS-489 or IS-401B as needed, and verify the lobby-to-station audio path end to end.

Affects: IS-489, IS-489-1, IS-401B, IS-51-2, IS-51-3 on MA-485A

03

TX3 Touch display or firmware fault

The 15 or 22 inch glass face stops responding to touch, boots into a black screen, or hangs on the Mircom splash after a firmware push. Recovery is a controlled reboot, a firmware re-flash with a known-good image, and a factory recalibration of touch input. For brick cases we swap the touch module.

Affects: TX3-TOUCH-S15, TX3-TOUCH-F15, TX3-TOUCH-S22, TX3-T10

04

TX3 Touch directory drift

Over years of turnover, the digital directory on a TX3 Touch panel drifts out of sync with the actual tenant roster. We re-sync against the current rent roll, verify dial-out routing per tenant, and label a maintenance procedure the super can run so the directory stops drifting.

Affects: TX3-TOUCH-S15, TX3-TOUCH-F15, TX3-TOUCH-S22, TX3-TOUCH-F22

05

MiVoIP registration drop after network change

A MiVoIP-equipped TX3 depends on a stable IP path from the lobby panel to Mircom's cloud. ISP router swaps, switch replacements, and firewall rule changes break registration. Panel goes silent, visitors cannot reach tenants. We reauthenticate the panel, verify outbound rules, and set a static reservation so the next network change does not break it again.

Affects: TX3 panels on MiVoIP

06

KV-series lobby panel aging

The KV aluminum lobby panel takes decades of weather, scratched buttons, and dented speaker covers. The electronics are usually still fine; the faceplate and buttons are the failure point. We replace faceplates and call buttons on the existing housing when stock allows, or recommend a controlled cutover to TX3 when the panel is past faceplate repair.

Affects: KV-12, KV-24, KV-36 in service past 20 years

The Service Specifics

Mircom is the Mircom Group of Companies, a Canadian commercial fire, communications, and voice-entry manufacturer headquartered in Vaughan, Ontario, in business since 1991. The product lines reach NYC through a dealer distribution channel and have long been the voice-entry choice for mid-size multi-tenant residential across the five boroughs and northern New Jersey.

Mircom intercom admin is on-panel for most TX3 setup; the Mircom cloud services layer (MiVoIP, MiConnect, MiEntry, MiVision) is opt-in rather than mandatory. A building can run the TX3 fully on-panel, or route calls through MiVoIP for POTS-sunset migration, or add MiConnect and MiEntry for mobile tenant credentials and remote admin. The IS-series apartment side runs independent of all of that on the 4-wire bus.

The Legacy Install Base

Pre-TX3 Mircom intercom still runs in many NYC buildings. The classic architecture is a KV-series lobby panel on a 4-wire riser driving IS-series suite stations through an MA-485 series amplifier. Mircom still catalogs every part of that chain, so legacy repair is a parts-in-hand job, not a forced upgrade.

Legacy 01

Pre-TX3 KV-series audio lobby panels

Older KV panels installed before TX3 became the spec. Still catalog parts; faceplate, call-button, and speaker-cover replacements keep them running. We repair in place when the housing is sound and recommend a planned TX3 upgrade only when the structure is past repair.

Legacy 02

Earlier IS-series and Urmet 1150 handsets

Legacy apartment handsets on the 4-wire bus. The current IS-series drops into the same wiring, and the Urmet 1150 Mircom distributes is a direct-fit audio handset for older risers. Both let a building replace failing units one at a time without re-wiring the apartment.

Legacy 03

MA-485 (non-A) amplifiers

Pre-MA-485A amplifiers still driving IS-series buses. The current MA-485A is a drop-in upgrade on the same wiring footprint when the older unit fails.

Mircom Repair FAQ

Move the TX3 to MiVoIP, Mircom's cloud voice service. The panel keeps routing visitor calls to tenant phones without a copper dial-tone pair; the routing goes over IP through Mircom's cloud instead. We provision the MiVoIP account, cut the panel over, verify tenant dial-out end to end, and label the cloud routing for your super. Same-visit for most installs.
Yes. On the Mircom IS-series bus, a single-apartment outage is almost always a dead station, a broken 4-wire pair in a junction, or a port fault on the MA-485A amplifier. We trace the bus from the apartment back to the amplifier, swap in a replacement IS-489 or IS-401B as needed, and verify the lobby-to-station audio path. The rest of the building stays live during the work.
Yes. The TX3 Touch family (TX3-TOUCH-S15, F15, S22, F22, or T10 for compact lobbies) replaces a TX3 Classic lobby panel without re-pulling the apartment wiring. The IS-series riser and MA-485A amplifier downstream of the panel keep running as they are. We plan the lobby cutover for a single visit, migrate the tenant directory into the touch panel, and verify the first call per tenant on the way out.
Yes. Directory drift happens on every digital directory after years of super turnover and tenant churn. We re-sync against the current rent roll, verify dial-out routing per tenant, and label a short maintenance procedure so the super can keep the directory current without a service call every time.
Both are valid; the choice is building-side. KV is still an active Mircom catalog line, so faceplates, buttons, and speaker covers are available in stock. If the housing is sound and the electronics are working, a repair in place is the shorter and cheaper visit. If the housing is dented past repair or the building is planning a lobby refresh, a controlled upgrade to a TX3 panel over the same apartment riser is the forward path.
Same-day across NYC when the schedule allows, with priority for POTS-sunset cutoffs and whole-building outages where tenants have lost entry access. Call 212-347-5400 for the soonest window.
