TELEPHONE ENTRY · 01 / WILL NOT DIAL OUT AT ALL

Will not dial out at all

The visitor enters the code and nothing happens. No call reaches the tenant. The phone line, dial tone detection on the panel, or the main board.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
Dial tone and line voltage, then the panel board.
TELEPHONE ENTRY · 02 / CALLS THE WRONG APARTMENT

Calls the wrong apartment

The visitor dials 4B and the phone in 2A rings. The directory programming drifted, or a tenant number changed in the panel but not everywhere. We re-sync it to the real tenant list.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
The directory programming against the current tenant list.
TELEPHONE ENTRY · 03 / DOOR WILL NOT RELEASE ON 9

Door will not release on 9

The tenant hears the visitor and presses the release key, and nothing happens at the door. The panel's strike output or its release key setting, or the strike itself.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
The release key setting, then voltage at the strike.
TELEPHONE ENTRY · 04 / KEYPAD STUCK OR DEAD KEYS

Keypad stuck or dead keys

Some keys do not register, or the keypad is stuck. Weather, wear or damage. We repair or replace the keypad, and the rest of the panel is almost always fine.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
The keypad and its connection to the board.
TELEPHONE ENTRY · 05 / PHONE LINE BEING RETIRED

Phone line being retired

Your carrier says the copper phone line feeding the panel is going away, and the panel depends on it. We convert the panel to cellular so it keeps working without the copper line.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
The panel model and whether a cellular module fits it.
TELEPHONE ENTRY · 06 / DISPLAY DEAD OR GARBLED

Display dead or garbled

The screen is dark, shows garbled characters, or only the backlight. The display board failed, or the panel is browning out. A display board or a keypad swap.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
Power to the panel, then the display board.

What breaks telephone entry 06

The six common culprits, in the order we check them.

We test the line first, then the panel, then the directory, then the door.

01

Phone line problem or retirement

Carriers are retiring copper phone lines across NYC. If your panel still runs on one, line wear, carrier changes or removal of the line will take the system down. We convert to cellular, or add a cellular backup to a working panel.

Line
02

Dial tone detection failure

The panel cannot detect dial tone when it picks up. Common after a carrier upgrade changed the line voltage, or when other equipment shares the line. Diagnosable on site.

Dial tone
03

Main board failure

The panel's main board failed: no dial, no response, dead keypad. A matched board for current panels, and reconditioned stock for many discontinued ones.

Board
04

Keypad wear

Outdoor keypads take thousands of presses in all weather. Keys stick, contacts corrode, and some stop registering. The keypad is replaced as a unit, and the rest of the panel is unaffected.

Keypad
05

Directory programming drift

Years of tenant turnover without panel updates, and the directory maps the wrong names to the wrong codes. We re-sync it to the real tenant list and update the paper or electronic directory.

Directory
06

Strike output or strike failure

The tenant presses the release key, and the door does not open. The panel's strike output failed, or the lock hardware did. We handle both in the same visit.

Your carrier is retiring the phone line?

Telephone entry panels dial out over a copper phone line, and carriers are retiring them. We add a cellular backup to a working panel, or convert it to cellular, so the entrance keeps working.

You do not need the original installer.

We work on the common telephone entry panels across NYC, including older models from vendors no longer around. We identify the panel, source parts or compatible substitutes, and get it dialing again.

The telephone entry panels we service

Dial-based entry systems across NYC, plus older unbranded panels in pre-war buildings. If it has a keypad and dials a phone, we have probably been inside one.

Repair first. Convert when the phone line is the problem.

When we repair

Most telephone entry calls are a repair: a keypad, a board, a directory update, a strike. Targeted fixes that keep your existing panel.

When we convert or replace

Your carrier is retiring the line feeding the panel, the panel is a dead model with no parts, or you were already planning a phone-based entry system. Then the money is better spent on the conversion or the new system.

The repair visit 04

How a telephone entry call goes.

Four steps, and every tenant is dialed before we leave.

01

Phone triage

Will not dial, wrong apartment rings, door will not release, keypad dead, or a line notice. Five minutes tells us which parts to put on the truck.

02

On-site diagnostic

The line first, then the panel, then the directory, then the strike. The first 20 minutes finds the failure.

03

Fix, or part on order

Keypads, boards for popular DoorKing and Linear models, and strikes are same-visit. Cellular conversions are a scheduled follow-up once the right module is ordered.

04

Test every tenant

The visitor dials, the right tenant rings, audio works, the release key opens the door. Written summary, and the new backend documented if we converted to cellular.

Frequent questions 06

Telephone entry FAQ.

Telephone entry dials the tenant's own phone, over a phone line or a cellular link, when a visitor enters their code. There is no audio wiring to each apartment and no handset. The tenant answers on their cell phone or landline and presses a key, usually 9, to open the door. Common in small apartment buildings, gated communities and garages.
Only if we convert it. Carriers are retiring copper lines, and the panel depends on that line. Two paths: swap to a modern cellular panel, or add a cellular module to your existing panel. We tell you which is the smarter spend for your system.
Yes, and it is one of the faster repairs. The directory programming drifted from the real tenant list after years of turnover. We re-sync it, update the listing at the panel, and test every apartment.
In most cases we repair it. We stock keypads, boards and common parts for current DoorKing and Linear panels, and reconditioned stock for older models. We recommend replacement only when the model is truly at end of life or you are converting off the copper line as a bigger project.
Sometimes. The panel's strike output can fail, or the panel can be set for the wrong release key. More often the strike at the door failed. We check both in one visit.
Same-day across NYC when the schedule allows, with priority for entrances that are completely unusable. Call 212-347-5400 for the soonest window.
