Solid black screen

The panel is on but the image is solid black. A failed camera module, a loose ribbon connector, or a dead backlight behind the glass. Usually a repair at the lobby panel.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
The camera module and the display at the lobby panel.
VIDEO · 02 / FROZEN IMAGE

Frozen image

One still frame that never refreshes. On IP panels the stream stalled. On analog systems the signal lost sync. A reboot can bring it back for a while, but the cause is in the wiring or the network.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
The stream or the video signal, not just a reboot.
VIDEO · 03 / DIM OR FLICKERING

Dim or flickering

The image is faint, washed out, or cuts in and out. A backlight or display driver on the way out, or a weak power supply browning out the panel.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
Power at the panel, then the backlight.
VIDEO · 04 / LOBBY DARK, APARTMENTS FINE

Lobby dark, apartments fine

Apartment screens still show visitors, but the lobby panel is black. The vestibule camera or display failed, or the panel lost power, often after a renovation or water.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
Power at the lobby panel, then the camera and display.
VIDEO · 05 / ONE APARTMENT SCREEN DARK

One apartment screen dark

The lobby looks fine on video, but one apartment screen is black. A failed apartment monitor, a broken cable to that unit, or a blown fuse on its riser.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
The monitor in that apartment, then its cable.
VIDEO · 06 / OFFLINE IN THE APP

Offline in the app

The IP panel shows offline. Tenants cannot answer from their phones, or the panel cannot reach its cloud. A network, firewall or account problem.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
A laptop at the panel: network, gateway, then the cloud.

What kills the picture 06

The six common culprits, in the order we check them.

A picture can die in four places: the lens, the display, the wiring and, on IP systems, the network.

01

Lobby camera module failure

The sensor or lens in the vestibule panel died, usually from weather, a seal that failed, or years of sun in a south-facing entry. We confirm it at the panel before ordering anything.

Camera
02

Display or backlight failure

The backlight, the display driver or the screen failed. Common over time in a dusty lobby. We test with a known-good panel. If the signal is there, the fix is a part.

Display
03

Coax, network or ribbon cable fault

The signal breaks somewhere between camera and screen. Water in a riser, a cable crushed during building work, a corroded BNC, or a damaged jack in the apartment. We trace it with a cable tester.

Cable
04

Power supply or PoE failure

A transformer browning out causes a dim or flickering image. A dead PoE injector turns the panel off. Common after storms or work in the electrical closet. A straight part swap.

Power
05

Network, firewall or cloud reach

On IP systems the panel cannot reach its cloud. A firewall change, a new router from the ISP, an address conflict, or an expired certificate on the firmware.

Network
06

Firmware or account settings

Firmware out of support, a stale device registration, or a removed tenant account still referenced by the panel. Common after a management change or a billing lapse.

Picture gone, door still works

No picture, but the buzzer still works?

Visitors can still be buzzed in on audio while we fix the video. Tell us which screen is black and what the panel is, and we bring the right part on the first visit.

Any brand, even if we did not install it

You do not need the original installer.

Most of our video intercom calls are on systems installed by companies that are long gone, and nobody knows the brand in the vestibule. We identify it on site, source the part, and get the picture back.

The video panels we service

Modern IP and app-based video intercoms across NYC, plus legacy analog video panels, older Mircom video and the composite systems common in pre-war buildings.

The lens, enclosure and camera side

The lens, the sensor and the vestibule enclosure take weather and vandalism the apartment screens never see. We carry camera modules for the common panels, replace cracked lens covers, and reseal exposed enclosures.

Repair or replace

Repair first. We tell you honestly when it is time to upgrade.

When we repair

Most video calls are a repair: a camera module, a backlight, a cable fault, a dead power supply or an account fix. Straightforward once isolated, and you keep the system you have.

When we recommend replacing

The panel is a discontinued analog model with no parts left, it has failed several times in a year, or you were already planning video with phone answering. Then the money is better spent on the new system.

The repair visit 04

How a video intercom call goes.

Four steps, and we test every view before we leave.

01

Phone triage

Black, frozen or offline, one apartment or the whole building, when it started, any recent power or network event. Five minutes tells us how fast to come.

02

Walk the chain

Lens at the panel, display at the panel, wiring to the head-end, then network and cloud on IP systems. The first 20 minutes finds the break.

03

Fix, or part on order

Standard camera modules, backlights, power supplies and popular panels are same-visit. For discontinued analog panels we restore audio-only operation while the part is on order.

04

Verify every view

Lobby picture, apartment screens, audio both ways and door release, in every apartment in scope. Written summary for the building file.

Frequent questions 07

Video intercom FAQ.

Most of the time it is a repair. No picture usually traces to a dead camera module, a failed backlight, a broken cable or an account setting. We recommend replacement only when parts are gone or the system keeps failing.
Modern IP and app-based: ButterflyMX, DoorBird, Akuvox, Comelit, Aiphone IX and Ubiquiti UniFi. Legacy analog: Aiphone JF and JO, older Mircom video, Hikvision and Dahua video intercoms, and the composite systems common in pre-war buildings. If we do not carry a part, we can almost always source it.
The camera or display at the vestibule failed, or that panel lost power. The apartment side is fine because it gets its signal from the head-end. We confirm on site and replace the camera module or restore power.
Usually, yes. A firewall change, a new router from the ISP, an address conflict or an expired certificate on the firmware all show as offline. We confirm with a laptop at the panel, then restore it without you calling your ISP.
In most cases we can repair it. We stock cameras, backlights and panels for the common older analog systems, and source what we do not stock. If the panel is a dead model with no parts anywhere, we lay out the upgrade honestly.
Same-day across NYC when the schedule allows. Buildings with a dark lobby panel or a security concern get priority. Call 212-347-5400 for the soonest window.
In New York City, multiple dwelling owners must keep entry communication and door release working under the Housing Maintenance Code and the Multiple Dwelling Law. Audio alone meets the baseline and video is not required, but once a building has video, tenants expect it to work and it becomes part of the maintained equipment.
