Lobby panel repair . NYC and tri-state

Lobby intercom panel not working? We find the fault before we replace anything.

Call buttons do nothing, the directory is unlit, the entrance speaker is silent, or the whole panel is dark. Vestibule hardware takes weather and abuse the apartment stations never see. We repair, reseal and replace with parts on the truck.

No light, no speaker, no buttons. The panel lost power: the transformer, a breaker, or the power board in the panel. Usually smaller than it looks.

LOBBY PANEL · 01 / WHOLE PANEL DARK

Whole panel dark

No light, no speaker, no buttons. The panel lost power: the transformer, a breaker, or the power board in the panel. Usually smaller than it looks.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
The transformer in the common closet, then the breaker.
LOBBY PANEL · 02 / ONE CALL BUTTON DEAD

One call button dead

One apartment's button does nothing while the rest work. The button wore out or its contact corroded. Common on busy entrances, and a cheap part swap.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
That button's contact, then every other button on the panel.
LOBBY PANEL · 03 / ALL CALL BUTTONS DEAD

All call buttons dead

No button registers, but the panel looks alive. The button board shorted, or the signal path back to the head-end is broken.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
The button board, then the run to the head-end.
LOBBY PANEL · 04 / DIRECTORY UNLIT

Directory unlit

The lit directory of names went dark. The backlight failed, or the directory lost its power feed. Many older panels use their own bulb or LED strip behind the acrylic.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
The directory light and its power feed.
LOBBY PANEL · 05 / SPEAKER SILENT, BUTTONS WORK

Speaker silent, buttons work

The apartment hears the call, but the lobby speaker gives nothing back when the tenant answers. The lobby speaker, the return audio path or the audio board failed.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
The lobby speaker, then the audio board.
LOBBY PANEL · 06 / CRACKED, VANDALIZED OR WET

Cracked, vandalized or wet

A cracked faceplate, a pried cover, corrosion inside, or water in the enclosure. Usually one or two parts under the cover are gone and the rest is fine.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
Under the cover: which boards are wet or broken.

What kills entry panels 05

The five common culprits, in the order we check them.

We check power first, then the call path, then each part.

01

Power supply failure

The transformer that feeds the panel died or is browning out. It causes whole-panel outages or dim, erratic behavior. It lives in the common closet, not at the panel. A straight swap.

Power
02

Weather intrusion

Vestibules see rain, snow and spray from the street. Gaskets age, water gets behind the panel, and it corrodes contacts and boards. We reseal, clean and swap the damaged parts, and the panel lasts years longer.

03

Mechanical wear on buttons

Call buttons get pressed thousands of times a year. Contacts pit and springs tire, and buttons stop registering or stick closed and buzz nonstop. A cheap part, a quick fix.

Buttons
04

Vandalism and impact

Exposed panels get kicked, scratched, pried and sprayed. A cracked faceplate, a button forced through its frame, a wrecked mic grill. We repair with matching or compatible parts and reinforce where it helps.

05

Wiring break to the head-end

The panel is fine, but its cable back to the head-end was damaged by plumbing, electrical or facade work. We trace it with a toner and repair the break.

Lobby panel completely dark?

Usually smaller than it looks. A fully dark panel almost always traces to power: a dead transformer in the common closet, a tripped breaker, or a loose connection at the panel. Rarely a whole new panel.

Any brand, even if we did not install it

You do not need the original installer.

Most lobby panel calls are on gear installed by companies that are no longer around. We identify what is there, source the part, and get the entrance working, including the door release.

The panel parts and the door

We carry the parts that fail at the entrance. If the panel works but the door will not release, we fix the strike in the same visit.

Repair or replace

We repair the panel first. Replacement only when it is right.

When we repair

Most panel issues are one part: a button, a speaker, a mic, a transformer, a backlight. Targeted fixes that keep your existing panel.

When we recommend replacing

The model is discontinued and parts are gone, the panel has failed in several places over the past year, or you were already planning video or app entry. Then the repair money is better spent on the new system.

The repair visit 04

How a lobby panel call goes.

Four steps, and every button is tested before we leave.

01

Phone triage

Fully dark, one button dead, speaker silent, directory unlit, or visible damage. Five minutes tells us which parts to put on the truck.

02

On-site diagnostic

Power first, then the call path, then each part: buttons, speaker, mic, directory. The first 15 minutes finds what died.

03

Fix, or part on order

Buttons, speakers, mics, standard directories and transformers are same-visit. For discontinued panels we order the part and set up a workaround so the entrance keeps working.

04

Verify every call path

Every button registers, audio works both ways, the directory is lit, and the panel is sealed against the weather. Written summary for the building file.

Lobby panel FAQ.

Usually smaller than it looks. A fully dark panel almost always traces to power: a dead transformer in the common closet, a tripped breaker, or a loose connection at the panel. Rarely a whole new panel. We confirm with a meter in the first few minutes.
That button's contact or spring wore out. A single-button repair is a cheap part swap, usually same-visit, and we test every button on the panel afterward.
Yes. Directories have their own low-voltage bulb or LED strip behind the acrylic. The fix is a bulb or strip swap, or a wiring repair back to the power source. Fast on most systems.
Not usually. Faceplates can be swapped with the original or a close match, broken buttons replaced one at a time, and mic grills swapped. We recommend a new panel only when the damage reaches several boards or the model is already at end of life.
Usually, yes. Many older NYC buildings run panels from brands long gone, and we have parts or compatible substitutes for most. We identify it on site, no paperwork needed. When a model is truly dead, we show you the honest upgrade path.
