Intercom audio repair . NYC and tri-state

Intercom no audio, or one-way audio? We repair both sides of the call.

You can hear the visitor but they cannot hear you, the other way around, or the intercom is silent both ways. Audio faults have a short list of causes, and we work through them in order so you do not pay for guesses.

AUDIO · 01 / I CANNOT HEAR THE VISITOR

I cannot hear the visitor

Your voice reaches the lobby, but the visitor does not come through. The lobby microphone failed, the mic path is open or shorted, or the amplifier for the lobby signal died.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
The lobby mic, then the path back to the amplifier.
AUDIO · 02 / THE VISITOR CANNOT HEAR ME

The visitor cannot hear me

The lobby mic works, but your voice does not carry out. The lobby speaker is dead, the outbound path is broken, or the talk button on the handset is not making contact.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
The lobby speaker, then the talk button on your handset.
AUDIO · 03 / SILENT BOTH WAYS

Silent both ways

The call registers, but nobody can hear anyone. Both audio paths are down, which points to a shared amplifier or power failure, or a cable fault on the audio bus.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
The amplifier and power in the common closet.
AUDIO · 04 / MUFFLED, SCRATCHY OR STATIC

Muffled, scratchy or static

You can hear, but it is bad. A clogged mic grill, water in the panel, or a corroded contact adding noise. Straightforward to clean and repair.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
The panel seal and the mic grill, then the contacts.
AUDIO · 05 / ONE APARTMENT SILENT

One apartment silent

Every other apartment works. One cannot hear or be heard. A failed handset speaker or mic, or a fault on that apartment's wire.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
The station in that apartment, then its wire.
AUDIO · 06 / CUTS IN AND OUT

Cuts in and out

It works, drops mid-call, then works again. A loose connector, a part failing as it heats up, or a power supply browning out. Worth catching before it fails for good.

FIRST THING WE CHECK
Power and connections in the closet, watched while it fails.

What kills intercom audio 06

The six common culprits, in the order we check them.

The audio path is short, so the list is short. We start at the lobby and work inward.

01

Lobby microphone failure

The vestibule mic takes weather, kicks and spray. It is the first piece to go in most buildings, and the cause of "I cannot hear them." An easy swap once confirmed.

Lobby mic
02

Lobby speaker failure

The vestibule speaker fails from the same exposure. It causes "they cannot hear me," and the lobby is dead silent when you talk from the handset.

Lobby speaker
03

Apartment handset or station

The mic or speaker inside one apartment's handset or wall station failed. It explains single-apartment audio outages. We match the station or fit a compatible substitute.

Station
04

Amplifier or head-end board

The shared amplifier for the whole building died, and every apartment loses audio. It sits in the common closet beside the power supply. A part swap, usually same-visit.

05

Riser or drop cable fault

A wire in the shared audio pair broke, corroded or shorted. One floor, one stack or one apartment loses audio, depending on where it sits. We trace it and repair it at the fault.

Riser
06

Water in the panel

Common in older buildings. Rain gets behind a cracked seal, corrodes the audio contacts, and adds static or silence. We reseal and clean or replace the contacts.

Which direction is silent?

Tell us who cannot hear whom. That one answer tells us which end of the chain to open first, and it usually means one trip instead of two.

Test from two apartmentsOne silent apartment is a station. All silent is the panel or the amplifier.
Note muffled versus deadMuffled is usually dirt or water. Dead is a part.
Send a short videoA few seconds of the call tells us a lot.
Any brand, even if we did not install it

You do not need the original installer.

Most of our audio calls are on systems from installers who are no longer around. We identify the system on site, source the part, and get the audio back without the original paperwork.

The intercom and call side

Multi-tenant audio intercoms and telephone entry systems across NYC, plus legacy and unbranded systems in pre-war buildings.

The audio parts we carry

Lobby mics, speakers, handsets and amplifiers for the common systems, and compatible substitutes when the original is gone. If the audio works but the door does not release, we fix that in the same visit.

Repair or replace

We fix first, and say when it is time to replace.

When we repair

Most audio faults are a part: a mic, a speaker, an amplifier, a handset, a corroded contact. All fixable, and you keep the system you have.

When we recommend replacing

The panel is a dead model with no parts anywhere, the system has had three audio failures in a year, or you are already considering a video or app upgrade. Then we lay out the modern path with honest trade-offs.

The repair visit 04

How an audio call goes.

Four steps, and we test both directions in every affected apartment.

01

Phone triage

Which direction is broken, how many apartments, when it started. Five minutes tells us which end of the chain to look at first.

02

On-site isolation

Lobby panel audio first with a tone generator, then the amplifier and power in the closet, then an affected apartment. The path is short, so the diagnostic is fast.

03

Fix, or part on order

Lobby mics, speakers, standard handsets and amplifiers for popular systems are same-visit. Specialty parts get a firm order date, and we restore partial audio where possible.

04

Test both directions

Lobby to apartment, apartment to lobby, in every apartment in scope. Written summary for the building file.

Frequent questions 06

Intercom audio FAQ.

Almost always the lobby microphone or the inbound audio path from the panel. The mic takes weather and abuse, so it goes first. An easy swap once we confirm it. In a few cases it is a shared amplifier affecting several apartments.
Yes. That points to the lobby speaker or the outbound path from your handset. We test both ends. Usually a speaker or handset repair, sometimes a worn talk button.
Yes, and it is often the easiest fix on the list. It usually means a clogged mic grill, water in the panel or a corroded contact. Clean, reseal or swap the part. Catching it early keeps the audio from going dead later.
Yes. It is isolated to that apartment's handset or its wire. The repair is cheaper and faster than a shared fix, and we bill it to that apartment or the owner, per your building's policy.
In most cases, yes. We stock mics, speakers and handsets for the common legacy systems, and source compatible substitutes when the original is gone. When the panel line is truly dead, we show you the honest upgrade path.
