UniFi Protect Camera System Repair:
G6, G5, G4, G3, UNVR, Cloud Key.
Ubiquiti's self-hosted camera ecosystem pairs with the broader UniFi network stack. Common in NYC commercial under 100 cameras where in-house IT runs the network and nobody wants per-camera cloud fees; also heavy in prosumer and multi-tenant residential installs from 2020 onward. We service current G6 generation, G5 and G4 workhorse, legacy G3, UNVR recorders, and UCK Cloud Keys.
Where UniFi Protect Fits in NYC
UniFi Protect is the self-hosted camera option for sites that already run UniFi networking and do not want per-camera cloud subscriptions. The fit is NYC commercial under 100 cameras, prosumer residential, and multi-tenant residential common areas. The appeal: free local recording, free remote viewing via Ubiquiti SSO, straightforward admin.
The service story is firmware-driven. Ubiquiti pushes frequent updates with occasional regressions, and the SSO account layer is the one meaningful cloud dependency. SSO lockout after an owner leaves without transferring ownership is the most common Protect takeover scenario.
No sanctions or dealer concerns. Firmware updates ship free indefinitely for supported hardware. The watch item is Ubiquiti's shift toward requiring UniFi SSO accounts for remote access and occasional cloud infrastructure outages that affect app-based viewing but not local recording.
The UniFi Protect Lineup
Cameras, recorders, controllers, and the Protect app layer.

G6 Series (current flagship)
8MP sensors across bullet, turret, dome, and PTZ form factors. The current line Ubiquiti pushes in 2024-2025 installs.

G5 and G4 Series (workhorse)
4MP cameras from 2020-2023 making up most of the installed base. Still fully supported by current firmware and the Protect app.

UNVR Recorders
4-bay (UNVR) and 7-bay 2U (UNVR-Pro) rack-mount NVRs running Protect locally. UNVR-Pro supports more cameras and faster drives.

UCK Cloud Keys (legacy Protect host)
Smaller controller devices that ran Protect before UNVRs became standard. Still in service across many pre-2022 installs.

G3 Series (older line)
2MP and early 4MP cameras from 2016-2019. Many still in use, firmware supported but not receiving new features.
What We See in the Field
UniFi Protect failures cluster around NVR drives, firmware regressions, and SSO account issues.
NVR hard drive failure
UNVR and UNVR-Pro recorders fail at the drive first. Ubiquiti ships drives from WD and Seagate; replacement is user-serviceable but needs matched drives for the RAID.
Affects: UNVR, UNVR-Pro, 2-4 year old units
UCK Cloud Key SD card wear
G2-Plus and Plus Cloud Keys use SD cards for footage; cards wear out from constant writes. Classic symptom is missing clips from the last few days.
Affects: UCK-G2-Plus, UCK-Plus, 2020-2022 installs
Firmware auto-update bricks on older models
Protect auto-updates can occasionally soft-brick a camera or roll back a feature on specific models. Rolling back firmware requires SSH access and recovery mode.
Affects: G3 and G4 series, cameras on older network controllers
PoE voltage drop on long runs
Ubiquiti cameras negotiate 802.3af class 2 but some draw more at startup. Cable runs over 300 feet with marginal switches cause boot-loop.
Affects: G4 Pro, G5 Flex, G6 Pro on long exterior runs
G3 Dome gasket failure
Early G3 Domes had gaskets that dried out over time outdoors. Water pools inside the dome bubble and shorts the sensor board.
Affects: UVC-G3-Dome, 2017-2019 outdoor installs
SSO account lockout
Protect ties to a Ubiquiti SSO account. When the account owner leaves without transferring ownership, you lose remote access and app push notifications.
Affects: Any UniFi Protect install, any vintage
The Service Specifics
No notable sanctions or dealer concerns. Firmware updates ship free indefinitely for supported hardware. UniFi Protect runs fully local; cloud is optional for remote viewing via the Protect app and SSO account.
SSO account recovery when the owner leaves is the primary admin challenge. Ubiquiti handles ownership transfer with proof of building ownership, typically within 1 week. We coordinate the recovery process.
Pre-Protect Era Hardware
First-generation UniFi cameras and recorders.
UVC (pre-Protect, airVision era)
First-generation IP cameras predating the Protect app from 2013-2016. Migration to Protect requires camera-by-camera replacement.
UVC-G3-Micro (plug-in indoor cube)
Small residential cube cameras discontinued around 2022. Still swap failed units with current G3 Instant where cosmetic match matters.
UVC-NVR (UniFi Video legacy)
First-generation Ubiquiti NVR appliance from the UniFi Video platform, discontinued around 2020 when Ubiquiti migrated to the Protect platform on UNVR hardware. Serviced in-place but we recommend UNVR upgrade when drive or power supply fails.
